In industrial automation, open communication protocols are key in enabling data exchange between PLC controllers, sensors, meters, and supervisory systems. Modbus (in RTU, ASCII, and TCP/IP variants), M-Bus (Meter-Bus), and physical interface standards such as RS-232 and RS-485 are among the most popular protocols.

Key Highlights:

  • RS-232: A traditional point-to-point serial interface suitable for short-distance communication (up to 15 meters). It's commonly used for connecting operator panels, modems, and simple sensors to PLCs or computers. However, it has limitations in terms of range and multi-device support.
  • RS-485: A differential bus standard that supports longer distances and multiple devices on a single network. It's widely used in industrial environments for robust and noise-resistant communication.

  • Modbus: A widely adopted protocol in industrial automation, available in RTU, ASCII, and TCP/IP variants. It's known for its simplicity and reliability in connecting various devices within an automation system.

  • M-Bus (Meter-Bus): Specifically designed for remote reading of utility meters, M-Bus is commonly used for electricity, water, and gas metering systems.
